The grading practices review data routine is used once or twice a grading period to identify patterns for why students with a C, D, or F are not finding success. By identifying reasons for failing grades, educators can identify classroom or instructional routines that could be improved to ensure that more students are successful. For example, it may come to light that a particular assignment could have benefitted from additional scaffolding, or that additional learning opportunities are required for students to be successful on some assessments or quizzes.

The ideal team is a group of 3-5 educators that share students, such as a grade level team, but can consist of any willing educators to build educator capacity for the data routine. It is helpful to designate a facilitator to help the group stay focused and productive. Inclusion specialists, administrators, and other support staff are also beneficial to have on the team.
